Discover the Fantastic Storybook Streets of Guanajuato

Discover the Fantastic Storybook Streets of Guanajuato

Nestled in the heart of Mexico lies Guanajuato, a city so charming it could have stepped right out of a storybook. The city is built into a deep valley and has a network of colorful alleys and tunnels, which is quite unusual. Its colonial architecture is preserved beautifully, and the underground tunnels once used for mining have been transformed into roadways. Additionally, the city’s artistic heritage, including connections to Diego Rivera, adds to its distinct charm. Three days spent in Guanajuato, you’ll discover why this city is considered one of the most charming places in Mexico.

Day 1: Walking Tour & Cultural Immersion

We started our day in the historic center of Guanajuato at Jardin Union. This is a great place to hire a local guide for a walking tour of Guanajuato who can share history and insights of this very colorful city. Guanajuato is a great town to explore on foot. All the sights noted below are within 5 minutes walking distance from each other.

A quick walk from Jardin Union will bring you to the El Callejón del Beso, or “The Alley of the Kiss.” This narrow alley is famous for its romantic legend. It’s said that two lovers from feuding families would meet secretly here. The story goes that if a couple kisses while standing on opposite balconies, they’ll enjoy seven years of good luck. The Callejón del Beso is famous, but the nearby Callejón de las Brujas or “Witches’ Alley” is where you’ll find some unique folklore and stories.

Mercado Hidalgo

We walked down the hill to enter Mercado Hidalgo. An impressive iron structure built in 1910 originally intended to house a train station. The train station was never finalized and instead the expensive unwanted structure was converted to a market that could be used by Guanajuato residents and create a place they could be proud of. The market can be chaotic at times with many vendors and food stalls but a great experience for all the senses.

Inside Alhóndiga de Granaditas

We headed over to Alhóndiga de Granaditas, a historic granary storage facility turned museum. This landmark played a crucial role during the Mexican War of Independence. You can learn about its rich history and enjoy its impressive architecture in the museum located in the building interior.  Museo Regional de Guanajuato offers a deep dive into the region’s history and culture. Highlights include ancient artifacts, revolutionary relics, and vibrant displays about Guanajuato’s silver mining past.

Just a short walk away is the Museo Casa Diego Rivera, the childhood home of the famous artist Diego Rivera. The museum showcases Rivera’s early works and personal artifacts. It’s a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Mexico’s greatest artists. This is a serene spot that often gets overlooked by tourists.

End your day back at the Jardin Union. This lively square is perfect for people-watching and soaking in the local atmosphere. Enjoy the surrounding cafes, street performers, and beautiful fountains. From the square, be sure to check out the stunning architecture of the surrounding buildings including the Teatro Juarez. One of our favorite restaurants is right off the square at Hotel San Diego on the second floor. We enjoyed a great Italian meal at La Trattoria. Be sure to make a reservation and ask for a table with a terraza view of the Jardin.

Day 2: Guanajuato Explorer

Take a Ride on the Guanajuato Funicular, which offers stunning views of the city. The ride itself lasts about 5 minutes, but you may want to spend additional time enjoying the view from the top. The mirador (viewpoint) at the top of the hill where the funicular station drops you off is very touristy. There are many people and vendors selling cheap souvenirs, but the view is impeccable.

Monument El Pipila

Monument El Pipila is a monument made of rose quartz exemplifying the historical bravery of a nation vying for Mexican Independence. The monument has a viewing platform at the top after ascending up a narrow staircase.

From Pipila, we grabbed a taxi to the Museo de las Momias. This unique museum houses naturally mummified bodies from the 19th century. It’s a bit eerie and creepy but utterly fascinating. Spend around an hour here learning about the history and science behind these remarkable mummies.

For a relaxing afternoon, we love spending time at the Paseo de la Presa, a beautiful spot along the dam where you can enjoy nature and a peaceful environment.

Day 3: Hidden Gems

Visit a silver mine. The largest silver vein in Mexico runs through this region of Guanajuato. There are several mines near town, about 15 mins by car or taxi. Organized tours to visit the mines are also available from the city center. We visited Bocamina San Ramon. The guided tour takes you into the tunnels to explore and learn about the mining history that shaped Guanajuato. The tour usually lasts about an hour and a half.

Templo La Valenciana

Be sure to visit the Templo La Valenciana nearby. The cathedral itself appears pretty understated from the outside. The intricate alter carvings are covered in gold leaf and worth a quick visit.

Enjoy the afternoon at Hacienda San Gabriel de Barrera. This is a beautiful hacienda built in the 17th century that contains an art museum and showcases the prosperity of the regions silver mines. The grounds are massive containing several different gardens. We wandered many of them: English garden, Roman garden, Oriental garden, garden of orange trees, Mexican garden, garden of lilies, garden of roses. A fantastic place to grab a coffee and just relax.

The Hacienda is also used as one of the venues for the Festival Internacional Cervantino. This annual festival in October draws performers and artists from around the world, making Guanajuato a cultural hub and really brings the whole community together.

Enjoy the rich history, vibrant culture, delicious food and vibrant landscape of this magical city. Guanajuato is a city that will capture your heart and imagination forever.

  1. Between the architecture and the Diego Rivera museum, this looks like a wonderful spot to add to our travel list, thanks!

  2. I haven’t spent any time in Mexico yet but I’d love to go. Guanajuato looks fabulous – I’d be straight to the market, and do what you recommend on the first day and just walk around the city, maybe do a walking tour. The silver mine sounds interesting – honestly, so do many things you’ve mentioned here. Great guide
